Effective viscosity of random suspensions without uniform separation

چکیده
This work is devoted to the definition and analysis of effective viscosity associated with a random suspension small rigid particles in steady Stokes fluid. While previous works on topic have been conveniently assuming that are uniformly separated, we show how some ideas due Jikov can be adapted relax this unphysical assumption, particular allowing for contacts dimension $d>3$ almost $d=3$, provided geometric non-degeneracy condition satisfied.

Effective viscosity properties of dilute suspensions of arbitrarily shaped particles
In this paper we derive high-order asymptotic expansions of the effective viscosity properties of a dilute periodic suspension composed of freely-suspended arbitrarily shaped particles dispersed in an incompressible Newtonian fluid. High-order terms are not only function of the viscous moment tensor but also of a distortion tensor that characterizes the periodic array. Mathematics subject class...
متن کاملEffective viscosity of dilute bacterial suspensions: a two-dimensional model.
Suspensions of self-propelled particles are studied in the framework of two-dimensional (2D) Stokesean hydrodynamics. A formula is obtained for the effective viscosity of such suspensions in the limit of small concentrations. This formula includes the two terms that are found in the 2D version of Einstein's classical result for passive suspensions. To this, the main result of the paper is added...

متن کاملViscosity of two-dimensional suspensions.
Over a range of conditions, lipid and surfactant monolayers exhibit coexistence of discrete solid domains in a continuous liquid. The surface shear viscosity, mu(s), of such monolayers collapses onto a single curve: mu(s)/mu(so) = [1-(A/A(c))](-1), in which mu(so) is the viscosity of the liquid phase, A is the area fraction of the solid phase measured by fluorescence microscopy, and A(c) is a c...
متن کاملViscosity of Suspensions: A Theoretical Study
In this work, Einstein’s formula for the viscosity of suspensions is revised to include effect of particle interactions. The revision is based on assumption of linear behavior of particle interactions with distance between particles. The resulting formula is tested over a range of particle size and concentrations. Good agreement is attained between theory and previously published measurements.
